I had the pleasure of getting to know Laverne through her active and highly engaged involvement in the Women's Network at Atlas Air. I met LaVerne during undergrad at Embry-Riddle in the summer of 2001 on a three-month study abroad in France. On night one, we were standing outside the train station. I had a fractured ankle, my foot in a walking boot, and a backpack I couldn't carry. She gave me that classic New Yorker look—half are you fricking serious and half what kind of person flies across the world for three months with a broken ankle. It was a fair read. Then, in true New Yorker fashion, she took off her coat, threw it over my shoulders, and took point. Direct, zero drama, take care of the person next to you, keep the line moving. That's been LaVerne ever since—steady under pressure, situationally sharp, and wired for complex systems. She has an instinct for sequencing and coordination that fits perfectly in aviation logistics. She thinks in terms of networks, flow, and interdependencies—the same way a flight operations manager sees the airspace. She anticipates problems before they surface, keeps teams aligned across time zones and functions, and turns moving parts into an organized system. I have known LaVerne for many years. I tried to go back in history (emails) and the only one email I could find was dated 26SEP2015 but our working relationship goes back well before that. LaVerne is not only a very caring person in nature but an amazing colleague as well. Ms. Bowman visited several classes of undergraduate aeronautical students with a presentation about Atlas Air and the intricacies of US Flight Operations. In addition to being well-prepared, well-spoken and well-presented, Ms. Bowman was extremely energetic and enthusiastic about the subject matter, leaving the approximately 100 students excited and interested in the topics as well.
